Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are bright, exceptional, hip students of the most diverse city in the world. They are kind, compassionate, socially aware, star-bright, and incredibly creative. I work at a low-income, low-budget school (title 1) and I don't get much money for supplies!! I mostly spend out of pocket, but this year I'm turning to Donor's Choose for help.
Our school is and continues to aim to be a sanctuary for all of the students.
The school fosters a transformative-justice oriented community and the students reciprocate these efforts through earnest engagement.
They deserve the best but our art room is tiny with limited resources!! NO SINK! (Eventually it would be great to fundraise for a portable one) That is why I'm here. Thank you for reading!
My Project
The course seeks to enable its participants with a sense of agency over What History Is and How It Is Told. We begin with an examination of what we know of history. We ask questions like, "Who writes history? Who gets to write them?" and "How is history preserved?"
We learn from each other when we ask one another, "What are your stories?" The goal of this project is to create a visual archive of those stories which we feel are important and personal to us.
The visual work and it's culminating exhibition will be our way of sharing ourselves with our community, and encouraging a culture of art and solidarity at our school.
The paints and paintbrushes I am ordering through donor's choose will be utilized to create visual images representing moments or entire stories from our personal histories.
